MATTHEW LEVI
Untitled
Anza Borrego Alabaster on a Black marble base
11 x 10 x 17 in
In Levi's private collection
Los Angeles, 2019
Description: This 1 of 1 is Matthew Levi's first stone sculpture. It most notably features wavelike forms similar to those he first became obsessed with in 2017 with his ceramic works. He found that waves are a staple symbol. The mounting of this sculpture is inspired by Levi’s rock-balancing practice.
Untitled (Previously "Flow" or "Hold Me")
Statuario Marble
8 x 3 x 20 in
Currently being exclusively offered to private collectors in advance of public release.
Santa Barbara, 2022
Description: Unlike his other interactive works, Matthew Levi designed this work without influence from the preexisting shape of the material. In this sculpture, he represents a concept called the “flow state” coined by Mihaly Csikszentmihalyi in the field of positive psychology. This piece is meant to remind people that contentment is found through the process of self-concordant work, during a state of consciousness called Flow.

Description: This stunning, highly polished, form is the result of Matthew Levi's collaboration with a discarded slab of white marble. Reflections on the white stone surface bend, shrink, expand, and melt as the viewer moves, hypnotizing the eye and heart with a symphony of captivating stripes. At first, the rigid, square stance of the rough discarded slab did not waver to the chisels attempting to shape it. Remenance of the slab’s original, pre-carved form can be found via a straight edge on the tall side which enlivens the juxtaposed dynamic curves that flow like silk and glisten like water.

Rainbow Eucalyptus
12 x 8 x 24 in
The artwork has been acquired; It is in a private collection.
Santa Barbara, 2023
Description: This abstract figure (carved from a stolen log of wet, newly chopped, rainbow eucalyptus cut down by the city) is finding support via a natural half nugget of white "wood-wedge" marble. This sculpture comments on the value of leaning on friends, family, or self-concordant work when needed. Levi's personal relationship with stone (the white marble that the figure is leaning on) and the other “rocks” (loved ones) in his life is illustrated here.

Description: In this abstract sculpture Matthew Levi illustrates an intimate scene of his parents (in the form of a single figure), sitting, holding, and gazing lovingly at him. It was created as a gift to thank and extol his Mother and Father for raising him and, acknowledge their remarkably formative and unconditional love.
